Gareth Bale is torn over how much longer he will remain in Spain.
Sunday Mirror Sport understands Bale, 25, is prepared to spend another year at the Bernabeu to try to win over the doubters – but would be willing to come back to the Premier League if the right offer arrives.
He has always been open to the prospect of joining Manchester United and if they come calling this summer – as expected – it will prove hugely tempting.
This is a testing time for Bale, who moved to Madrid in 2013 for world record £85.3million.
He was constantly booed by fans throughout Real’s Champions League match against Schalke last Tuesday although club president Florentino Perez has been hugely supportive during his slump.
But the Welshman has decided he wants his two-year-old daughter educated back home and plans to put down long-term roots with partner, Emma.
So it seems increasingly likely Bale will be back in the Premier League within 18 months at most, or in January if United can come up with the right package.
United tried to get Bale when he was leaving Tottenham and with Madrid now eyeing Old Trafford keeper David De Gea as their top target for next season, any summer conversations between the two clubs could prove interesting.
