Case on Buhari’s certificate goes to sleep

The suit filed by Nnamdi Kwokocaha-Ahaaiwe
asking the court to nullify the election of
Muhammadu Buhari as President has gone to
sleep as an Abuja High Court today adjourned it
indefinitely.
Nnamdi, an Abuja-based lawyer had gone to
court arguing that Buhari was not qualified to
run for the position because he did not possess
the minimum qualification to run for the office.
He alleged that Buhari did not sit for the
Cambridge West African School Certificate,
WASC, in 1961.
But the federal High Court in Abuja presided over
by Justice Adeniyi Ademola on Thursday
adjourned the suit indefinitely, following a notice
of appeal filed by the President.
On Wednesday, Buhari had appealed against a
previous ruling of the court dismissing his
preliminary objection to the suit filed by Nnamdi.
The president had lined up some senior lawyers
led by Wole Olanipekun (SAN) to argue his case.
Others in the team are, Lateef O. Fagbemi (SAN),
Akin Olujinmi (SAN), Oluwarotimi O. Akeredolu
(SAN), Kola Awodein (SAN) and Taiwo Osipitan
(SAN).
There were also Charles Edosomwan (SAN),
Emeka Ngige (SAN), Femi Atoyebi (SAN), Femi
Falana (SAN), Funke Aboyade (SAN) and H.O.

The controversy over the academic credentials of
Buhari generated a lot of controversy prior to the
2015 general elections, with the Nigerian Military
initially claiming that Buhari’s certifecate was
not in their custody.
The president allegedly did not include his WASC
certificate in the binder of documents he
tendered to the Independent National Electoral
Commission, INEC, as required for candidates in
an election.
He instead wrote to INEC saying that his
secondary school certificate was with the military
board, a claim the board refuted leaving the
political atmosphere tense then.
It is the same allegation that Nnamdi is holding
on to question the authenticity of Buhari’s
emergence as President.
