Ernesto Valverde and his Barcelona players can feel quietly confident after their 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, given the club’s history with that result in the first leg of a knockout tie in the Champions League.
Of the 13 times the Catalan club have found themselves in that position, they have progressed to the next round in 11 of them.
The only occasions where they failed to do so were against Juventus and CSKA Moscow.
In 1992/93, Barcelona drew 1-1 in the Russian capital, but were beaten 3-2 in the last 16 second leg, whilst Juventus punished the Catalans with a 2-1 win in Barcelona in 2003 in the Champions League quarter-final.
The last time this result happened in an away first leg was in 2010, when Barcelona thrashed German side Stuttgart 4-0 at the Camp Nou after a 1-1 draw in the first leg.
However, Chelsea too could be happy with the result based on the past, given that they have reached the next round on three of the five occasions they have had a 1-1 first leg draw.
The only time they failed was in the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup against a Spanish rival, RCD Mallorca.
