” Police is your friend”
What a friendly but barbaric slogan, I always tell people I don’t like involving myself in Power, Power is Pride, it comes with a whole lot of gratification and confidence having in mind that it’s a great achievement being the head, your word is order, your decision is final, you lead and others follow, what a blithe-full feeling if not carefully maintained might be misused.
Someone will join the Police with the aim of protecting and helping the government in fighting crimes but the case is other wise immediately they are given the uniform, the uniform comes with power, that uniform comes with pride, authority and respect, you have a licensed gun attached to it and that makes you a god on other humans who are the “civilians”.
The uniform is a symbol of honor, courage, strength and peace to protect the people and enforce the laws of the nation, the people should feel safe with aplomb whenever they come across the “uniform man” the people should feel free to report any form of threat to their lives, finance and property, but when the nature of power takes place humans turn to animal.
I opine that the government should endeavor that the police goes through thorough training since the security of the nation lies in their hands, every country has rules and regulations written or unwritten in their constitutions which the police should have knowledge of that’s the only way they can know the various Human Rights being meted out in the Constitution in other not to infringe on the rights of the citizens they should carefully understand that Section 4 of the Police Act provides that, ‘The police shall be employed for the prevention and detection of crime, the apprehension of offenders, the preservation of law and order, the protection of life and property and the due enforcement of all laws and regulations with which they are directly charged and shall perform such military duties within or outside Nigeria as may be required of them by, or under the authority of this or any other Act.’
I will like to talk about the Separation of powers, Separation of powers therefore refers to the division of responsibilities into distinct branches to limit any one branch from exercising the core functions of another. The intent of separation of powers is to prevent the concentration of unchecked power by providing for “checks” and “balances” to avoid autocracy, over-reaching by one branch over another, and the attending efficiency of governing by one actor without need for negotiation and compromise with any other, just to make sure there’s no conflict of powers. Most times the problem comes from the government the “oga at the top” for example when a Governor is interested in a case, the commissioner backs off instead of exercising it’s power and that has always been the case in Nigeria which will bring us to “corruption “.
BThe police is self centered, egocentric and are being driven by their selfish nature to extort citizens, police extortion is just like a normal thing to everyone because it has been a tradition and it’s eating deep into the Nigerian police system, so many things are taken for granted, the police don’t even know their duties, here in Nigeria the police are above the law because we don’t have a functioning legal system, the constitution is a joke, even the judicial system is in menace and Human Rights violations and that’s why everyone is a criminal to them forgetting that everyone is a suspect until being proven otherwise. I will like to bring our minds to the Latin maxim ei incumbit probatio qui dicit, non qui negat (“the burden of proof is on the one who declares, not on one who denies”). Thus the legal principle that one is considered innocent unless proven guilty is a legal right of the accused in a criminal trial, and it is an international human right under the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights Article 11, the ChapterIV of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is taken for granted, there’s no respect for human right. The human rights abuses which have become a reoccurring decimal among the security agencies include illegal arrests and detention, prolonged detention without trial, refusal to grant bail, the list is endless. Since these types of infringements against the rights of the citizens have become a daily occurrence in our police stations and other detention centres the question is, how could citizens who fall victim of Police detention without bail or trial enforce their fundamental human rights to liberty and freedom when the system is extremely corrupt .
Nigeria is a blessed Nation that has all it takes to be better than the present day Nigeria, the citizens are wise, ambitious, prudent, successful and creative and they contribute positively one way or the other to the economic growth and development of almost all the countries round the world and every blessed day people are apply for visa to go out from Nigeria because of bad government, corruption and insecurity, the youths are no more safe in their own Father’s land, every successful youth in Nigeria is in cyber related crimes according to the Nigerian police and this is because they know that the government has no plan for the youths, no job or any empowerment scheme for the youths.
Having experienced some of this problems and how rampant they are as we all see in our daily activities here in Nigeria, if you don’t watch them on your television screen, they are all over the internet or you see them on the road, you might even be a victim. No one is safe anymore but huge sums of money are spent every year for the security of the citizens of Federal Republic of Nigeria. I have taken my time to try and understand the system and reason for all these menace and I can say that the current system in Nigeria isn’t working, nothing can ever work when the system doesn’t work, the government seem to have joined forces with the Police to fight war against the same citizens that voted for them, against the same citizens that took all the risk despite the rate of insecurity they came out in mass voted for good government but instead of giving the people the bread they asked for they are being fed wit lots and lots of stones.
Which way Nigeria!
Alas! Great men in black
You seem brave but not civilized
We are turned slaves and being victimized
By some ingrates you named SARS
To inflict more pains they created another branch of treacherous bandits that has been ripping lives off, humans tasting for blood, killing innocent youths, those uniforms and guns aren’t for war, not for humiliation and degradation, brutality against humanity, how do you take a life you never gave?
